Scale Overview
The Adolescent Self-Esteem Questionnaire (ASQ) was developed by Hafekost, J., Lawrence, D., Boterhoven de Haan, K., Sawyer, M. G., & Zubrick, S. R. (2015). It is designed to measure Self-Esteem. The scale is intended for use with Adolescents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 13 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: A1 = Almost all of the time (Items 1-7), A2 = A lot of the time (Items 1-7), A3 = Some of the time (Items 1-7), A4 = A little of the time (Items 1-7), A5 = Hardly ever (Items 1-7), B1 = Strongly agree (Items 8-13), B2 = Agree (Items 8-13), B3 = Neither agree nor disagree (Items 8-13), B4 = Disagree (Items 8-13), B5 = Strongly Disagree (Items 8-13).
The scale includes 4 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 13 to 65. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Self-Esteem: 13 – 34
- Moderate Self-Esteem: 35 – 52
- High Self-Esteem: 53 – 65
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.88.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
