Scale Overview
The Achievement Motivation Scale – AMS was developed by B. Shah (1988). It is designed to measure Achievement Motivation. The scale is intended for use with Adults and students.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 22 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a dichotomous True/False format.
The scale includes 11 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 22. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low need for achievement: 0 – 5
- Moderately low need for achievement: 6 – 9
- Average need for achievement: 10 – 16
- Moderate need for achievement: 17 – 19
- High need for achievement: 20 – 22
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
