Scale Overview
The Acceptance and Rejection Measure – ARM was developed by Amanda M. Pollitt, Jessica N. Fish, & Ryan J. Watson (2023). It is designed to measure Family acceptance and rejection of sexual and gender minority youth. The scale is intended for use with Sexual and Gender Minority Youth (Ages 13-17).

This instrument consists of 8 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Family Rejection, Family Acceptance.

Response Format

Scoring

Total scores range from 4 to 16. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low: 4 – 8
- Moderate: 9 – 12
- High: 13 – 16
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Family Rejection alpha = 0.88, Family Acceptance alpha = 0.82.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
