Scale Overview
The Academic Self-Regulation Questionnaire – SRQ-A was developed by Richard M. Ryan & James P. Connell (1989). It is designed to measure Academic Self-Regulation. The scale is intended for use with Late elementary and middle school students.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 32 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: External Regulation, Introjected Regulation, Identified Regulation, Intrinsic Motivation.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not at all True, 2 = Not very True, 3 = Sort of True, 4 = Very True.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 1 to 4. Interpretation guidelines:
- Average subscale score (higher scores indicate stronger endorsement of that regulatory style): 1 – 4
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Subscale Cronbach's alphas typically range from 0.62 to 0.82.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
