When the brain receives conflicting or ambiguous signals—eye muscles are attempting to hold fixation, but the retinal image is shifting—it engages in a compensatory movement of the perceived object to maintain spatial consistency. Therefore, autokinesis is best understood as a failure of the brain’s internal stabilization mechanisms, rather than a simple error localized solely to the eye or retina.
