a feeling of visual arousal which goes on briefly following the actual stimulant being eliminated, perhaps caused by consolidation delay of visual signals.

PERSISTENCE OF VISION: “Persistence of vision occurs most commonly when exposure to a bright light is immediately followed by darkness.”
