Scale Overview
The Multiple Indicators of Subjective Sexual Arousal – Ratings of Sexual Arousal (MISSA-RSA) was developed by Donald L. Mosher, M. Barton-Henry, & S. E. Green (1988). It is designed to measure Subjective sexual arousal. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 5 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = No arousal / sensation / warmth / absorption at all, 2 = 2, 3 = 3, 4 = 4, 5 = 5, 6 = 6, 7 = Extremely aroused / Extreme sensation / warmth / absorption.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 5 to 35. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low subjective sexual arousal: 5 – 14
- Moderate subjective sexual arousal: 15 – 25
- High subjective sexual arousal: 26 – 35
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Median Cronbach's alpha of .97.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 2 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
