Scale Overview
The Aging Sexual Knowledge and Attitudes Scale (ASKAS) was developed by Charles B. White (1982). It is designed to measure Sexual knowledge and attitudes regarding the elderly. The scale is intended for use with Adults, nursing home staff, nursing home residents, and families of older adults.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = True (Knowledge) / Disagree (Attitudes), 2 = False (Knowledge) / 2 (Attitudes), 3 = Don't know (Knowledge) / 3 (Attitudes), 4 = 4 (Attitudes), 5 = 5 (Attitudes), 6 = 6 (Attitudes), 7 = Agree (Attitudes).
The scale includes 17 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 35 to 182. Interpretation guidelines:
- Knowledge Score Range (Lower score indicates higher knowledge): 35 – 105
- Attitudes Score Range (Lower score indicates more permissive attitude): 26 – 182
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Knowledge alpha: .90 – .93; Attitudes alpha: .76 – .87.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
