Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Sexual Cognitions Checklist (SCC) was developed by Cheryl A. Renaud, Sandra Byers (1999). It is designed to measure Positive and negative sexual cognitions. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 56 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Sexual Dominance Subscale, Sexual Submission Subscale.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Sexual Dominance Subscale | 11,22,27,30,39,48 | 6 |
| Sexual Submission Subscale | 5,6,10,19,20,23,26,31,34,47 | 10 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = I have never had this thought, 1 = I have had this thought only once or twice ever, 2 = I have had this thought a few times a year, 3 = I have had this thought once or twice a month, 4 = I have had this thought once or twice a week, 5 = I have had this thought daily, 6 = I have this thought frequently during the day.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 336. Interpretation guidelines:
- Total Positive (POSCOG) or Negative (NEGCOG) Cognitions Score Range: 0 – 336
- Positive (POSDOM) or Negative (NEGDOM) Dominance Subscale Score Range: 0 – 36
- Positive (POSSUB) or Negative (NEGSUB) Submission Subscale Score Range: 0 – 60
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of POSCOG alpha = .95; NEGCOG alpha = .95-.96; POSDOM alpha = .71-.76; NEGDOM alpha = .66-.84; POSSUB alpha = .80-.81; NEGSUB alpha = .82.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
