Scale Overview
The Weighted Topics Measure of Family Sexual Communication – WTM was developed by Terri D. Fisher (1986). It is designed to measure Family Sexual Communication. The scale is intended for use with Parents and adolescents/young adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 9 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = None, 1 = A Little, 2 = Some, 3 = Quite a Bit, 4 = A Lot.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 36. Interpretation guidelines:
- Total Score (higher scores indicate greater amounts of communication): 0 – 36
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.87 – 0.91.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
