Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Condom Use Errors/Problems Survey – Men (M-CUES) was developed by Richard A. Crosby, Cynthia A. Graham, Robin R. Milhausen, Stephanie A. Sanders, William L. Yarber (2008). It is designed to measure Condom use errors and problems. The scale is intended for use with Sexually active men.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 16 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Error Items, Problem Items.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Error Items | 1,2,3,4,6,7,9,10,11 | 9 |
| Problem Items | 5,8,12,13,14,15,16 | 7 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = No / 0 occasions, 1 = 1 occasion, 2 = 2 occasions, 3 = 3 occasions.
The scale includes 3 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 48. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low frequency of errors/problems: 0 – 12
- Moderate frequency of errors/problems: 13 – 28
- High frequency of errors/problems: 29 – 48
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of N/A (designed as a behavioral checklist rather than a single construct scale).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
