Scale Overview
The Sexual Situation Questionnaire – SSQ (Influence Strategies Subscale) was developed by E. Sandra Byers & Lucia F. O’Sullivan (1988). It is designed to measure Sexual coercion and influence strategies in dating relationships. The scale is intended for use with Heterosexual dating partners.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 5 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a dichotomous Yes/No format.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 5. Interpretation guidelines:
- Total number of influence strategies used: 0 – 5
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Mean interrater agreement of .85 to .87.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
