The Hurlbert Index of Sexual Excitability – HISE was developed by David F. Hurlbert, C. Apt, S. M. Rabehl (1993). It is designed to measure Sexual excitability. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 25 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = All of the time, 1 = Most of the time, 2 = Some of the time, 3 = Rarely, 4 = Never.
The scale includes 14 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 100. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low sexual excitability: 0 – 33
- Moderate sexual excitability: 34 – 66
- High sexual excitability: 67 – 100
