Measures an individual's self-efficacy (confidence) in performing various interpersonal behaviors organized around the interpersonal circumplex.
Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Circumplex Scales of Interpersonal Efficacy – CSIE was developed by Kenneth D. Locke (2007). It is designed to measure Interpersonal Efficacy. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 32 items organized into 8 factors/subscales: PA (Dominant), BC (Arrogant/Hostile-Dominant), DE (Cold/Hostile), FG (Aloof/Hostile-Submissive), HI (Unassured/Submissive), JK (Exploitable/Friendly-Submissive), LM (Warm/Friendly), NO (Gregarious/Friendly-Dominant).
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| PA (Dominant) | 4,12,20,28 | 4 |
| BC (Arrogant/Hostile-Dominant) | 7,15,23,31 | 4 |
| DE (Cold/Hostile) | 2,10,18,26 | 4 |
| FG (Aloof/Hostile-Submissive) | 5,13,21,29 | 4 |
| HI (Unassured/Submissive) | 8,16,24,32 | 4 |
| JK (Exploitable/Friendly-Submissive) | 6,14,22,30 | 4 |
| LM (Warm/Friendly) | 3,11,19,27 | 4 |
| NO (Gregarious/Friendly-Dominant) | 1,9,17,25 | 4 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Not at all confident, 2 = Mildly confident, 5 = Moderately confident, 8 = Very confident, 10 = Absolutely confident.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 10. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Efficacy: 0 – 2
- Moderate Efficacy: 3 – 7
- High Efficacy: 8 – 10
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Adequate internal reliability.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
