Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Circumplex Scales of Interpersonal Efficacy (CSIE) was developed by Kenneth D. Locke (2007). It is designed to measure Interpersonal Self-Efficacy. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 32 items organized into 8 factors/subscales: PA (Agentic), BC (Agentic & Uncommunal), DE (Uncommunal), FG (Unagentic & Uncommunal), HI (Unagentic), JK (Unagentic & Communal), LM (Communal), NO (Agentic & Communal).
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| PA (Agentic) | 4,12,20,28 | 4 |
| BC (Agentic & Uncommunal) | 7,15,23,31 | 4 |
| DE (Uncommunal) | 2,10,18,26 | 4 |
| FG (Unagentic & Uncommunal) | 5,13,21,29 | 4 |
| HI (Unagentic) | 8,16,24,32 | 4 |
| JK (Unagentic & Communal) | 3,11,19,27 | 4 |
| LM (Communal) | 6,14,22,30 | 4 |
| NO (Agentic & Communal) | 1,9,17,25 | 4 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = I am not at all confident that…, 2 = I am mildly confident that…, 5 = I am moderately confident that…, 8 = I am very confident that…, 10 = I am absolutely confident that….
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 10. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Efficacy: 0 – 3
- Moderate Efficacy: 4 – 7
- High Efficacy: 8 – 10
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Adequate internal reliability.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
