Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Command Safety Assessment Survey – CSAS was developed by Naval Postgraduate School (O’Connor, P., Buttrey, S., O’Dea, A., & Kennedy, Q.) (2011). It is designed to measure Safety Climate. The scale is intended for use with U.S. Naval aviators and aviation squadron personnel.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 7 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: Quality Assurance, Reward System, Command and Control, Risk Management.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Quality Assurance | 1,5 | 2 |
| Reward System | 2 | 1 |
| Command and Control | 3,4,7 | 3 |
| Risk Management | 6 | 1 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 5-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree).
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 7 to 35. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Safety Climate Perception: 7 – 17
- Moderate Safety Climate Perception: 18 – 28
- High Safety Climate Perception: 29 – 35
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
