A comprehensive self-report measure designed to assess the quality of the coparenting relationship across multiple domains.
Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Coparenting Relationship Scale (CRS) was developed by Feinberg, M. E., Brown, L. D., & Kan, M. L. (2012). It is designed to measure Coparenting Quality. The scale is intended for use with Parents in a coparenting relationship.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 35 items organized into 7 factors/subscales: Coparenting Agreement, Coparenting Closeness, Exposure to Conflict, Coparenting Support, Coparenting Undermining, Endorse Partner Parenting, Division of Labor.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Coparenting Agreement | 6,9,11,15 | 4 |
| Coparenting Closeness | 2,17,24,28,30 | 5 |
| Exposure to Conflict | 31,32,33,34,35 | 5 |
| Coparenting Support | 3,10,19,25,26,27 | 6 |
| Coparenting Undermining | 8,12,13,16,21,22 | 6 |
| Endorse Partner Parenting | 1,4,7,14,18,23,29 | 7 |
| Division of Labor | 5,20 | 2 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Not true of us / Never, 1 = A little bit true of us / Sometimes (once or twice a week), 2 = A little bit true of us (Level 2) / Sometimes, 3 = Somewhat true of us / Often (once a day), 4 = Somewhat true of us (Level 4) / Often, 5 = Very true of us / Very Often (several times a day), 6 = Very true of us (Level 6) / Very Often.
The scale includes 8 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 210. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Coparenting Quality: 0 – 70
- Moderate Coparenting Quality: 71 – 140
- High Coparenting Quality: 141 – 210
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Varies by subscale (see Feinberg et al., 2012).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
