Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Surface Warfare Officer Human Factors Attitudes Questionnaire (SWOHFAQ) was developed by O’Connor (2011). It is designed to measure Human factors attitudes in maritime operations. The scale is intended for use with Surface Warfare Officers (SWOs).
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 36 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: My stress, Stress of others, Communication, Command responsibility.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| My stress | 1,3,4,7,8,15,22 | 7 |
| Stress of others | 9,13,17,19,21,25 | 6 |
| Communication | 2,5,10,11,12,20,23,24,28,31,33 | 11 |
| Command responsibility | 6,14,16,18,26,27,29,30,32,34,35,36 | 12 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 5-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree).
The scale includes 13 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 36 to 180. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low alignment with safety attitudes: 36 – 84
- Moderate alignment with safety attitudes: 85 – 132
- High alignment with safety attitudes: 133 – 180
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
