Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Team Learning and Psychological Safety Survey was developed by Amy Edmondson (1999). It is designed to measure Team Psychological Safety and Team Learning Behavior. The scale is intended for use with Work teams and organizational employees.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 23 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: Psychological Safety, Team Learning Behaviors (Internal), Team Learning Behaviors (External), Team Learning Outcomes.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Psychological Safety | 1,2,3,4,5,6 | 6 |
| Team Learning Behaviors (Internal) | 7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14 | 8 |
| Team Learning Behaviors (External) | 15,16,17,18,19,20 | 6 |
| Team Learning Outcomes | 21,22,23 | 3 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 7-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 7 = Strongly Agree).
The scale includes 7 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 1 to 7. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low: 1 – 3
- Moderate: 3 – 5
- High: 5 – 7
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Reliability, validity, and factor structure established (Edmondson, 1999).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 8 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
