Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Two Factor Consideration of Future Consequences Scale – CFC-14 was developed by Jeff Joireman, Monte J. Shaffer, Daniel Balliet, and Alan Strathman (2012). It is designed to measure Consideration of Future Consequences. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 14 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: CFC-Future, CFC-Immediate.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| CFC-Future | 1,2,6,7,8,13,14 | 7 |
| CFC-Immediate | 3,4,5,9,10,11,12 | 7 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Extremely uncharacteristic, 2 = Very uncharacteristic, 3 = Somewhat uncharacteristic, 4 = Neutral, 5 = Somewhat characteristic, 6 = Very characteristic, 7 = Extremely characteristic.
The scale includes 7 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 1 to 7. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low consideration: 1 – 3
- Moderate consideration: 3 – 5
- High consideration: 5 – 7
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha from .80 to .84.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
