Scale Overview
The Affective Learning and Instructor Evaluation Scales (ALIES) was developed by McCroskey, J. C. (1994). It is designed to measure Affective Learning and Instructor Evaluation. The scale is intended for use with Students / Adult learners.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 16 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: Affect toward content, Affect toward classes in this content, Affect toward instructor, Affect toward taking classes with this instructor.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = 1 (Strongly associate with left adjective), 2 = 2, 3 = 3, 4 = 4 (Neutral), 5 = 5, 6 = 6, 7 = 7 (Strongly associate with right adjective).
The scale includes 8 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 4 to 28. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Affect / Negative Evaluation: 4 – 11
- Moderate Affect / Neutral Evaluation: 12 – 20
- High Affect / Positive Evaluation: 21 – 28

Administration
