Scale Overview
The Appearance-Based Rejection Sensitivity Scale – 15-Scenario Version (Appearance-RS) was developed by Lora E. Park (2007). It is designed to measure Appearance-based rejection sensitivity. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 30 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Anxious Concern, Expectation of Rejection.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = 1 (Very unconcerned / Very unlikely), 2 = 2, 3 = 3, 4 = 4, 5 = 5, 6 = 6 (Very concerned / Very likely).
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 1 to 36. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Appearance-Based Rejection Sensitivity: 1 – 9
- Moderate Appearance-Based Rejection Sensitivity: 10 – 18
- High Appearance-Based Rejection Sensitivity: 19 – 36
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of High internal consistency and test-retest reliability.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
