Scale Overview
The Pain Audit Tools – Patient Pain Interview (PAT-PPI) was developed by City of Hope Pain & Palliative Care Resource Center (1991). It is designed to measure Pain intensity, symptom severity, and pain treatment satisfaction. The scale is intended for use with Patients experiencing pain, particularly palliative care and oncology patients.

This instrument consists of 7 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Pain Intensity, Symptoms, Treatment Satisfaction.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = No Pain / Never / Not At All Satisfied, 1 = 1, 2 = 2, 3 = 3, 4 = 4, 5 = 5, 6 = 6, 7 = 7, 8 = 8, 9 = 9, 10 = Pain As Bad As You Can Imagine / All the Time / Very Satisfied.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 10. Interpretation guidelines:
- Individual item scores are evaluated clinicaly; higher scores indicate greater pain/symptom severity or higher satisfaction.: 0 – 10
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
