Positive Generalization Scale – POG
Measures the tendency to generalize from a single positive experience to a broader sense of self across lateral, upward, and social domains.
Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Positive Generalization Scale – POG was developed by Carver, C. S. (2008). It is designed to measure Positive Generalization. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 16 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Lateral generalization, Upward generalization, Social generalization.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Lateral generalization | 1,3,6,8,11,16 | 6 |
| Upward generalization | 2,4,7,9,15 | 5 |
| Social generalization | 5,10,12,13,14 | 5 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = I agree a LOT, 2 = I agree a LITTLE, 3 = I neither agree nor disagree, 4 = I disagree a LITTLE, 5 = I disagree a LOT.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 16 to 80. Interpretation guidelines:
- High Positive Generalization: 16 – 36
- Moderate Positive Generalization: 37 – 59
- Low Positive Generalization: 60 – 80
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
