The Sexual Wanting Questionnaire – SWQ was developed by Zoë D. Peterson & Charlene L. Muehlenhard (2007). It is designed to measure Sexual wanting. The scale is intended for use with College students and adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 45 items organized into 6 factors/subscales: In the Mood, Not in the Mood, Lack of Confidence, Disliked the Other Person, Not Intoxicated, Negative Consequences.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: -3 = A strong reason for not wanting to have sex, -2 = A moderate reason for not wanting to have sex, -1 = A weak reason for not wanting to have sex, 0 = Not a reason for wanting or not wanting to have sex, 1 = A weak reason for wanting to have sex, 2 = A moderate reason for wanting to have sex, 3 = A strong reason for wanting to have sex.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 3. Interpretation guidelines:
- Reasons for Wanting Subscale Range (Higher scores indicate stronger reasons for wanting sex): 0 – 3
- Reasons for Not Wanting Subscale Range (Lower scores indicate stronger reasons for not wanting sex): -3 – 0
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alphas for subscales ranged from .72 to .95.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
