Scale Overview
The STI Education Efficacy Survey (SEES) was developed by Patricia Barthalow Koch, Andrew W. Porter, and Clinton Colaco (2009). It is designed to measure STI education efficacy (knowledge, attitudes, confidence, readiness). The scale is intended for use with Educators, teachers, and community health instructors.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 48 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: Knowledge of Sexually Transmitted Infections, Attitudes Toward Adolescent Sexuality and Sexuality Education, STI Education Confidence, STI Education Readiness.

Response anchors: Part 1: 1 = True, Part 1: 2 = False, Part 1: 3 = Don't Know, Part 2: 1 = Strongly Agree, Part 2: 2 = Agree, Part 2: 3 = Uncertain, Part 2: 4 = Disagree, Part 2: 5 = Strongly Disagree, Part 3: 1 = No Confidence at all, Part 3: 2 = Very Little Confidence, Part 3: 3 = Somewhat Confident, Part 3: 4 = Very Confident, Part 3: 5 = Extremely Confident, Part 3: 6 = Does Not Apply, Part 4: 1 = Not Ready at all, Part 4: 2 = Hardly Ready, Part 4: 3 = Somewhat Ready, Part 4: 4 = Very Ready, Part 4: 5 = Extremely Ready, Part 4: 6 = Does Not Apply.
The scale includes 4 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 50. Interpretation guidelines:
- Knowledge Score Range (0 = lowest, 25 = highest): 0 – 25
- Attitudes Score Range (10 = least positive, 50 = most positive): 10 – 50
- Confidence Score Range (8 = least confidence, 40 = highest confidence): 8 – 40
- Readiness Score Range (5 = least readiness, 25 = highest readiness): 5 – 25
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Knowledge KR-20 = .89; Attitudes alpha = .75; Confidence alpha = .92; Readiness alpha = .89.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
