Scale Overview
The STI Education Efficacy Survey (SEES) was developed by Patricia Barthalow Koch, Andrew W. Porter, Clinton Colaco (2009). It is designed to measure STI Education Efficacy. The scale is intended for use with Educators, teachers, and community health workers.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 48 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: Knowledge of Sexually Transmitted Infections, Attitudes Toward Adolescent Sexuality and Sexuality Education, STI Education Confidence, STI Education Readiness.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Agree (Attitudes) / True (Knowledge) / No Confidence (Confidence) / Not Ready (Readiness), 2 = Agree / False / Very Little Confidence / Hardly Ready, 3 = Uncertain / Don't Know / Somewhat Confident / Somewhat Ready, 4 = Disagree / Very Confident / Very Ready, 5 = Strongly Disagree / Extremely Confident / Extremely Ready, 6 = Does Not Apply (Confidence and Readiness scales only).
The scale includes 4 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 50. Interpretation guidelines:
- Knowledge Subscale Score (Higher scores indicate greater STI knowledge): 0 – 25
- Attitudes Subscale Score (Higher scores indicate more positive attitudes): 10 – 50
- Confidence Subscale Score (Higher scores indicate greater teaching confidence): 8 – 40
- Readiness Subscale Score (Higher scores indicate greater readiness to implement): 5 – 25
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Knowledge alpha = .89; Attitudes alpha = .75; Confidence alpha = .92; Readiness alpha = .89.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
