Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Age Universal Religious Orientation Scale (Age Universal I-E Scale) was developed by Richard L. Gorsuch & G. Daniel Venable (1983). It is designed to measure Religious Orientation (Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic). The scale is intended for use with Children (fifth grade and older) and adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 20 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Intrinsic Orientation, Extrinsic Orientation.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Intrinsic Orientation | 1,5,6,7,9,11,12,16,19 | 9 |
| Extrinsic Orientation | 2,3,4,8,10,13,14,15,17,18,20 | 11 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = I strongly disagree, 2 = I tend to disagree, 3 = I'm not sure, 4 = I tend to agree, 5 = Strongly agree.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 9 to 55. Interpretation guidelines:
- Intrinsic Orientation Score Range: 9 – 45
- Extrinsic Orientation Score Range: 11 – 55
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Intrinsic subscale alpha: .68 – .73; Extrinsic subscale alpha: .66 – .75.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
