Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Religious Orientation Scale-Revised – I/E-R was developed by Richard L. Gorsuch & Susan E. McPherson (1989). It is designed to measure Religious Orientation. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 14 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Intrinsic, Extrinsic-Personal, Extrinsic-Social.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Intrinsic | 1,3,4,5,7,10,12,14 | 8 |
| Extrinsic-Personal | 6,8,9 | 3 |
| Extrinsic-Social | 2,11,13 | 3 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 5-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree).
The scale includes 3 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 8 to 40. Interpretation guidelines:
- Intrinsic Orientation Score Range: 8 – 40
- Extrinsic-Personal Score Range: 3 – 15
- Extrinsic-Social Score Range: 3 – 15
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Intrinsic: .83, Extrinsic-Personal: .57, Extrinsic-Social: .58.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
