Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Religious Orientation Scale-Revised (I/E-R) was developed by Richard L. Gorsuch & Susan E. McPherson (1989). It is designed to measure Religious Orientation. The scale is intended for use with Adults and adolescents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 14 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Intrinsic Orientation, Extrinsic-Personal Orientation, Extrinsic-Social Orientation.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Intrinsic Orientation | 1,3,4,5,7,10,12,14 | 8 |
| Extrinsic-Personal Orientation | 6,8,9 | 3 |
| Extrinsic-Social Orientation | 2,11,13 | 3 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = I strongly disagree, 2 = I tend to disagree, 3 = I'm not sure, 4 = I tend to agree, 5 = I strongly agree.
The scale includes 3 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 8 to 40. Interpretation guidelines:
- Intrinsic Orientation Score Range: 8 – 40
- Extrinsic-Personal Orientation Score Range: 3 – 15
- Extrinsic-Social Orientation Score Range: 3 – 15
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Intrinsic: .83, Extrinsic-Personal: .57, Extrinsic-Social: .58.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
