The Belief in Divine Intervention Scale – BOIS was developed by D. Degelman & D. Lynn (1995). It is designed to measure Belief in divine intervention. The scale is intended for use with General population.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 6 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly disagree, 2 = Somewhat disagree, 3 = Slightly disagree, 4 = Slightly agree, 5 = Somewhat agree, 6 = Strongly agree.
The scale includes 2 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 6 to 36. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low belief in divine intervention: 6 – 15
- Moderate belief in divine intervention: 16 – 25
- High belief in divine intervention: 26 – 36
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha of .91.
