Scale Overview
The Dogmatism Scale – Form E (D-Scale) was developed by Milton Rokeach (1960). It is designed to measure Dogmatism. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 40 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: -3 = Strongly disagree, -2 = Disagree, -1 = Slightly disagree, +1 = Slightly agree, +2 = Agree, +3 = Strongly agree.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 40 to 280. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Dogmatism (Open Belief System): 40 – 140
- Moderate Dogmatism: 141 – 183
- High Dogmatism (Closed Belief System): 184 – 280
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.68 – 0.93.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
