Scale Overview
The Workplace Ostracism Scale – WOS was developed by D. Lance Ferris, Douglas J. Brown, John W. Berry, & Hui Lian (2008). It is designed to measure Workplace Ostracism. The scale is intended for use with Working adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 10 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Never, 2 = Once in a while, 3 = Sometimes, 4 = Fairly often, 5 = Often, 6 = Constantly, 7 = Always.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 10 to 70. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Workplace Ostracism: 10 – 20
- Moderate Workplace Ostracism: 21 – 45
- High Workplace Ostracism: 46 – 70
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.89.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
