Scale Overview
The Subjective Monotony Scale – SMS was developed by Melamed, S., Ben-Avi, I., Luz, J., & Green, M. S. (1995). It is designed to measure Subjective work monotony. The scale is intended for use with Employees / Working adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 4 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = No, 1 = ?, 3 = Yes.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 12. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Monotony: 0 – 4
- Moderate Monotony: 5 – 8
- High Monotony: 9 – 12
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha ranged from .68 to .76.
Administration
