Scale Overview
The Inventory of Stressful Events – ISE was developed by Motowidlo, S. J., Packard, J. S., & Manning, M. R. (1986). It is designed to measure Occupational Stress. The scale is intended for use with Nurses and hospital staff.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 45 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Never, 2 = Seldom, 3 = Sometimes, 4 = Fairly often.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 45 to 180. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Frequency of Stressful Events: 45 – 90
- Moderate Frequency of Stressful Events: 91 – 135
- High Frequency of Stressful Events: 136 – 180
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.88.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
