Scale Overview
The Role Overload Scale – ROS was developed by Samuel B. Bacharach, Peter R. Bamberger, Sharon C. Conley (1990). It is designed to measure Role Overload. The scale is intended for use with Working adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 3 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Definitely false, 2 = Mostly false, 3 = Mostly true, 4 = Definitely true.
The scale includes 1 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 3 to 12. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Overload: 3 – 5
- Moderate Overload: 6 – 9
- High Overload: 10 – 12
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha ranged from .60 to .64.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 1 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
