Cross-Cultural Role Conflict, Ambiguity, and Overload Scales
Measures three dimensions of work-related role stress: role conflict, role ambiguity, and role overload, designed for cross-cultural equivalence.
Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Cross-Cultural Role Conflict, Ambiguity, and Overload Scales was developed by Peterson, M. F., Smith, P. B., Akande, A., Ayestaran, S., Bochner, S., Callan, V., Cho, N. G., Jesuino, J. C., D’ Amorim, M., Francois, P., Hofmann, K., Koopman, P. L., Leung, K., Lim, T. K., Mortazavi, S., Munene, J., Radford, M., Ropo, A., Savage, G., Setiadi, B., Sinha, T. N., Sorenson, R., & Viedge, H. (1995). It is designed to measure Role Stress (Conflict, Ambiguity, Overload). The scale is intended for use with Working adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 13 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Role Conflict, Role Ambiguity, Role Overload.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Role Conflict | 1,2,3 | 3 |
| Role Ambiguity | 4,5,6,7,8 | 5 |
| Role Overload | 9,10,11,12,13 | 5 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 5-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree).
The scale includes 5 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 1 to 5. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Stress: 1 – 2
- Moderate Stress: 3 – 3
- High Stress: 4 – 5
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Role Ambiguity: .87, Role Conflict: .93, Role Overload: .93.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
