The Role Innovation Scale was developed by Michael A. West (1987). It is designed to measure Role Innovation. The scale is intended for use with Employees / Working adults.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = I do the job much the same as other people have done it, 2 = I do the job somewhat differently than others have done it, 3 = I do the job very differently than others have done it, 4 = I do the job completely differently than others have done it, N/A = Not applicable, DK = Don't know.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 1 to 4. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Role Innovation: 1 – 2
- Moderate Role Innovation: 2 – 3
- High Role Innovation: 3 – 4
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.88 – 0.90.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
