Scale Overview
The Work-Home Conflict Scale – WHCS was developed by Bacharach, S. B., Bamberger, P., & Conley, S. (1991). It is designed to measure Work-Home Conflict. The scale is intended for use with Working adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 4 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Never, 2 = Seldom, 3 = Often, 4 = Almost always.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 4 to 16. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Conflict: 4 – 8
- Moderate Conflict: 9 – 12
- High Conflict: 13 – 16
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha of .77.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 2 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
