Assesses work-family conflict across time-based, strain-based, and behavior-based dimensions.
Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Work to Family Conflict Scale – WFCS was developed by Stephens, G. K., & Sommer, S. M. (1996). It is designed to measure Work-to-family conflict. The scale is intended for use with Employed adults with family responsibilities.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 14 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Time-based conflict, Strain-based conflict, Behavior-based conflict.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Time-based conflict | 1,2,3,4 | 4 |
| Strain-based conflict | 5,6,7,8 | 4 |
| Behavior-based conflict | 9,10,11,12,13,14 | 6 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 7-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 7 = Strongly Agree).
The scale includes 5 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 14 to 98. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low work-to-family conflict: 14 – 42
- Moderate work-to-family conflict: 43 – 70
- High work-to-family conflict: 71 – 98
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Behavior-based: .80, Time-based: .74, Strain-based: .77.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
