Scale Overview
The Goal Congruence Scale was developed by Joseph B. Vancouver & Neal W. Schmitt (1991). It is designed to measure Goal Congruence. The scale is intended for use with Employees (originally school teachers and staff).
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 14 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Of no importance, 1 = 1, 2 = 2, 3 = 3, 4 = 4, 5 = 5, 6 = Of primary importance.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 0 to 6. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Importance: 0 – 2
- Moderate Importance: 3 – 4
- High Importance: 5 – 6
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Intraclass correlations averaged .24.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
