The Drug Use Disorders Identification Test – DUDIT was developed by Anne H. Berman, Hans Bergman, Tomas Palmstierna, Claes Schlyter (2003). It is designed to measure Drug use disorders and drug-related problems. The scale is intended for use with Adults and adolescents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 11 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Drug Consumption, Dependence Symptoms, Harmful Use.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Never / No / 0, 1 = Monthly or less / Less than monthly / Less often than once a month / 1-2 times, 2 = 2-4 times a month / Monthly / Every month / 3-4 times / Yes, but not over the past year, 3 = 2-3 times a week / Weekly / Every week / 5-6 times, 4 = 4 or more times a week / Daily or almost daily / Daily or almost every day / 7 or more times / Yes, over the past year.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 44. Interpretation guidelines:
- No drug-related problems (Male & Female): 0 – 1
- Probable drug-related problems for females; Low risk for males: 2 – 5
- Probable drug-related problems (harmful use or abuse): 6 – 24
- Highly probable drug dependence: 25 – 44
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.90.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
