Scale Overview
The Social Interaction Anxiety Scale – SIAS was developed by Mattick, R. P., & Clarke, J. C. (1998). It is designed to measure Social interaction anxiety. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 20 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Not at all characteristic or true of me, 1 = Slightly characteristic or true of me, 2 = Moderately characteristic or true of me, 3 = Very characteristic or true of me, 4 = Extremely characteristic or true of me.
The scale includes 3 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 80. Interpretation guidelines:
- Below cutoff for probable social phobia: 0 – 35
- Probable social phobia: 36 – 80
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
