The Social Components of Retirement Anxiety Scale – SCRAS was developed by Fletcher, W. L., and Hannson, R. O. (1991). It is designed to measure Retirement Anxiety (Social Components). The scale is intended for use with Older workers preparing for retirement.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 23 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: Social Integration, Social Adjustment/Hardiness, Anticipated Social Exhaustion, Lost Friendships.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 5-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree).
The scale includes 5 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 23 to 115. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low retirement anxiety: 23 – 53
- Moderate retirement anxiety: 54 – 84
- High retirement anxiety: 85 – 115
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.84 – 0.90.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
