Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Stages of Concern Questionnaire (SoCQ) was developed by Gene E. Hall, Archie A. George, William L. Rutherford (1977). It is designed to measure Stages of concern about an innovation. The scale is intended for use with Educators, faculty, and professionals undergoing organizational change.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 35 items organized into 7 factors/subscales: Stage 0 (Awareness), Stage 1 (Informational), Stage 2 (Personal), Stage 3 (Management), Stage 4 (Consequence), Stage 5 (Collaboration), Stage 6 (Refocusing).
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Stage 0 (Awareness) | 3,12,21,23,30 | 5 |
| Stage 1 (Informational) | 6,14,15,26,35 | 5 |
| Stage 2 (Personal) | 7,13,17,28,33 | 5 |
| Stage 3 (Management) | 4,8,16,25,34 | 5 |
| Stage 4 (Consequence) | 1,11,19,24,32 | 5 |
| Stage 5 (Collaboration) | 5,10,18,27,29 | 5 |
| Stage 6 (Refocusing) | 2,9,20,22,31 | 5 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Not true of me now, 1 = Not true of me now, 2 = Somewhat true of me now (low), 3 = Somewhat true of me now, 4 = Somewhat true of me now, 5 = Very true of me now (low), 6 = Very true of me now, 7 = Very true of me now.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Alpha coefficients range from 0.64 to 0.83 across the seven stages.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
