Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Effects of Teacher Immediacy Questionnaire (ETIQ) was developed by C. A. Crump (1996). It is designed to measure Teacher Immediacy. The scale is intended for use with College students.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 24 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Verbal Immediacy, Nonverbal Immediacy.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Verbal Immediacy | 4,7,13,14,17,19,20,23 | 8 |
| Nonverbal Immediacy | 1,2,3,5,6,8,9,10,11,12,15,16,18,21,22,24 | 16 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly agree, 2 = Agree, 3 = Undecided, 4 = Disagree, 5 = Strongly disagree.
The scale includes 7 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 24 to 120. Interpretation guidelines:
- High sensitivity to teacher immediacy: 24 – 56
- Moderate sensitivity to teacher immediacy: 57 – 88
- Low sensitivity to teacher immediacy: 89 – 120
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Not specified.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 8 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
