Scale Overview
The Higher Order Need Strength Measure B was developed by J. Richard Hackman, Greg R. Oldham (1974). It is designed to measure Higher Order Need Strength. The scale is intended for use with Employees / Working adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 12 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Prefer A, 2 = Slightly Prefer A, 3 = Neutral, 4 = Slightly Prefer B, 5 = Strongly Prefer B.
The scale includes 6 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 1 to 5. Interpretation guidelines:
- Predominance of lower order need choices: 1 – 2
- Neutral / Balanced need choices: 3 – 3
- Predominance of higher order need choices: 3 – 5
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.71.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
