Scale Overview
The Student Stress Inventory – SSI was developed by Michael J. Fimian (1989). It is designed to measure Student Stress. The scale is intended for use with Students.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 60 items organized into 6 factors/subscales: Student Distress, Social/Academic Problems, Emotional Manifestations, Behavioral Manifestations, Physiological Manifestations, Other Items.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Student Distress | 1,3,4,7,10,11,13,15,16,22,23,25,27,28 | 14 |
| Social/Academic Problems | 18,20,21,24,26,31 | 6 |
| Emotional Manifestations | 32,35,36,37,41,43,47,49,52,55 | 10 |
| Behavioral Manifestations | 42,48,53,56,59,60 | 6 |
| Physiological Manifestations | 34,44,45,50,54,57 | 6 |
| Other Items | 2,5,6,8,9,12,14,17,19,29,30,33,38,39,40,46,51,58 | 18 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = No Strength; not noticeable, 2 = Of Mild Strength; barely noticeable, 3 = Of Medium Strength; moderately noticeable, 4 = Of Great Strength; very noticeable, 5 = Of Major Strength; extremely noticeable.
The scale includes 15 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Total scale alpha: 0.80; Student distress: 0.85; Social/academic problems: 0.63; Emotional manifestations: 0.83; Behavioral manifestations: 0.76; Physiological manifestations: 0.80.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
