Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Faculty Beliefs about Grades Inventory – FBGI was developed by L. B. Barnes (1997). It is designed to measure Faculty beliefs about grading systems. The scale is intended for use with Undergraduate college faculty.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 24 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Frame of Reference, Gatekeeping.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Frame of Reference | 1,2,4,7,8,10,13,14,18,20,22,23,24 | 13 |
| Gatekeeping | 3,5,6,9,11,12,15,16,17,19,21 | 11 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Disagree, 2 = Disagree, 3 = Unsure but tend to Disagree, 4 = Neither Agree nor Disagree, 5 = Unsure but tend to Agree, 6 = Agree, 7 = Strongly Agree.
The scale includes 8 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 24 to 168. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low endorsement of norm-referenced/gatekeeping grading beliefs: 24 – 72
- Moderate endorsement of norm-referenced/gatekeeping grading beliefs: 73 – 120
- High endorsement of norm-referenced/gatekeeping grading beliefs: 121 – 168
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Frame of Reference: alpha = 0.86; Gatekeeping: alpha = 0.83.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 8 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
