Teaching Behaviors Questionnaire – TBQ
Measures attitudes toward research-based effective teaching behaviors across six instructional categories.
Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Teaching Behaviors Questionnaire – TBQ was developed by Gregory J. Marchant, Newton D. Bowers (1990). It is designed to measure Attitudes toward research-based effective teaching behaviors. The scale is intended for use with Teachers, preservice teachers, and school administrators.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 36 items organized into 6 factors/subscales: Instructional Design and Structure, Active Teaching, Giving Information, Questioning the Student, Reacting to Student Responses, Handling Seatwork and Homework Assignments.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Instructional Design and Structure | 1,5,12,22,25,30,33,35 | 8 |
| Active Teaching | 2,4,9,15,23,34 | 6 |
| Giving Information | 11,13,26,27 | 4 |
| Questioning the Student | 7,10,14,17,19,36 | 6 |
| Reacting to Student Responses | 8,21,24,28 | 4 |
| Handling Seatwork and Homework Assignments | 3,6,16,18,20,29,31,32 | 8 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Disagree, 2 = Disagree, 3 = Agree, 4 = Strongly Agree.
The scale includes 15 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 36 to 144. Interpretation guidelines:
- Lower alignment with research-based effective teaching behaviors: 36 – 90
- Higher alignment with research-based effective teaching behaviors: 91 – 144
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.76.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
